Lahore’s officials are considering closing schools for three days to protect student health, in light of the worsening air quality in the city.
With smog levels reaching critical thresholds, the proposed plan includes shutting schools on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. A final decision is expected after a review by environmental authorities in early November.
As per the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Lahore’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) is at a concerning 208, placing it among the most polluted cities globally.
The deteriorating air quality has resulted in Lahore being classified as the most polluted city in Pakistan and the second most polluted in the world. In response to this alarming situation, the Punjab government has declared a ‘green lockdown’ in the most affected areas of the city.
This lockdown, issued by the Environmental Protection Department, enforces several restrictions, including a ban on construction activities and limits on the entry of auto-rickshaws in designated zones.
Furthermore, the use of commercial generators will be restricted, and outdoor barbecues will be prohibited after 8 pm in these high-pollution areas. The areas impacted by the lockdown include Abbott Road, Empress Road, and the vicinity of Queen Mary Road.
