New Storage Upgrade Will Make Your Smartphone Over 2x Faster

Samsung has unveiled its next-generation UFS 5.0 storage technology for smartphones, wearables, and other connected devices.

The new storage solution focuses on future devices that process large amounts of AI data locally. Samsung says it provides more than twice the performance of its UFS 4.1 technology while also using less power and taking up less internal space.

Since Samsung is a major hardware provider for smartphones worldwide, this upgrade is expected to reach handsets far and wide.

Much Faster Storage

Samsung says UFS 5.0 can reach sequential read speeds of up to 10.8GB/s and write speeds of up to 9.5GB/s.

These figures make it the fastest UFS storage solution announced by the company so far. They are also more than twice the speed offered by Samsung’s current UFS 4.1 technology.

Samsung developed the solution using the latest embedded memory interface specifications defined by JEDEC.

Local AI Processing

The higher bandwidth will allow devices to move and process large datasets more quickly.

This could benefit on-device AI tasks involving large language models and generative AI features. Faster storage could reduce delays and improve responsiveness as more AI processing moves from cloud servers to smartphones and other products.

The additional performance could also support smoother multitasking when devices handle several data-heavy processes at the same time.

Over 40% More Power Efficient

Samsung says UFS 5.0 improves power efficiency by more than 40 percent compared with UFS 4.1.

The company achieved this through technologies including clock gating and multi-voltage operation. These features allow devices to transfer data while consuming less power.

The storage package measures 7.5mm x 13mm x 0.9mm, making it around 16.7 percent smaller than the previous generation.

Its smaller size could leave more internal space for other components in smartphones, XR headsets, and AI-focused wearables.

Production Plans

Samsung plans to begin mass production of UFS 5.0 in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The storage will be available in capacities of up to 1TB. Samsung expects manufacturers to use it in a range of next-generation devices as demand for on-device AI processing continues to increase.
