A bench of Justice Shakeel Ahmad and Justice Sahibzada Asadullah has ordered action on a petition about a delayed bus route in Peshawar. The petition was filed by Jamil Akhtar and other residents about the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) feeder route between Peshawar Stadium Chowk and Pishtakhara Chowk on Ring Road. The next hearing date will be decided later.
The petitioners asked the court to direct authorities to launch the bus service soon, providing comfortable transportation for many residents along this route.
The planned route between Stadium and Pishtakhara Chowks was initially notified by the government in 2018.
Respondents in this case include the provincial government, the KP Urban Mobility Authority, and the Peshawar Cantonment Board, among others.
Lawyers for the petitioners, Mohammad Salman Ali and Barrister Rahat Ali Khan Nahaqi explained that Peshawar’s BRT system covers major areas through dedicated tracks and feeder routes connecting nearby streets.
They shared that although the BRT launched on August 13, 2020, the feeder route from Stadium Chowk to Pishtakhara Chowk is yet to begin.
They also argued that delays are due to lack of permissions for BRT buses to use cantonment roads.
During the hearing, Justice Shakeel Ahmad noted that the government should have considered starting the BRT service on Khyber Road as well, as it is a key route with schools, offices, and courts nearby.
