A retired army commando was shot dead in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) area on Wednesday in what police suspect was a failed mugging attempt. The incident occurred on 26th Street, within the jurisdiction of the Clifton police station.
According to police, a 45-year-old former member of the Special Services Group (SSG) of the Pakistan Army, Saeed, had withdrawn cash from a bank and stopped for a cigarette when he was approached by armed assailants.
As he resisted the robbery attempt, the attackers opened fire and fled, leaving him critically injured. Saeed was rushed to a hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The victim was reportedly carrying Rs. 500,000 and a pistol at the time of the attack, but the robbers did not take the cash or the weapon. Saeed, who was working as a security guard after his retirement, was accompanied by a colleague who was unharmed during the incident.
Police retrieved CCTV footage that shows four suspects on two motorcycles involved in the crime. The case has raised concerns over law enforcement’s response, leading to the removal of the Clifton SHO after authorities took notice of the incident. Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar has called for a detailed report.
