The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday conducted a hearing on petitions regarding the government’s failure to implement effective measures to tackle the ongoing smog crisis.
During the proceedings, the court issued several directives aimed at controlling the worsening air pollution.
The Lahore High Court ordered that all markets close by 8 p.m. and instructed a crackdown on vehicles emitting excessive smoke. These measures are aimed at curbing the harmful effects of the growing smog in the region.
The court also mandated that all private offices in the city implement a work-from-home policy for two days to reduce the number of commuters and improve air quality. The court also issued instructions for the closure of markets every Sunday to further reduce air pollution.
It directed the traffic police to take immediate action against smoke-emitting vehicles and emphasized that the Dolphin Police should assist in the crackdown. Justice Shahid Karim recommended that the government impose fines of Rs. 50,000 on vehicles producing excessive smoke.
The provincial government was instructed to ensure that these measures were enforced strictly. These actions follow increasing concerns over the severe smog affecting the health and daily lives of residents, particularly in urban areas.
