A three-member constitutional bench of the Sindh High Court (SHC) lifted the restraining order on government school teacher recruitment in Sindh on Wednesday, just a day after the bench was formed.
The bench, headed by Justice Muhammad Karim Khan Agha, allowed the recruitment of primary school teachers (PST) and junior elementary school teachers (JEST) in the province, following the petitioners’ “no objection” to vacating the stay order.
The stay, which had been in effect for 18 months, was challenged by the Sindh government, which argued that the restriction had paralyzed the education system, hampering the quality of education and the functioning of schools. The government sought permission to recruit teachers to improve educational standards.
Previously, the SHC had issued a stay order halting the recruitment process after several petitions were filed against the government’s teacher recruitment policy. The petitioners, who questioned the fairness of the policy, argued that it introduced distinctions between candidates from different regions, allowing those from certain areas to qualify with lower passing marks.
The constitutional bench’s ruling is the first of its kind since its formation and allows the government to proceed with teacher appointments across the province.
