LHC Directs Govt to Adopt Work-From-Home Policy for Schools and Offices

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has instructed the government to introduce a work-from-home policy for schools and offices as part of efforts to combat the worsening smog situation in Punjab.

Justice Shahid Karim issued the directive during a hearing on smog mitigation measures, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address the crisis.

During the proceedings, Justice Karim remarked that despite advice given to the government, smog control measures have yet to yield satisfactory results. He stressed that administrative inefficiencies, such as frequent transfers of Deputy Commissioners, were hindering progress.

The judge also called for a halt to construction activities, which contribute to air pollution. The court ordered the formulation of a comprehensive transport inspection policy with detailed data tracking.

A member of the Smog Commission informed the court that trees had been cut down to make space for electric bus depots in the Township area, and it was alleged that the felled trees were illegally sold in timber markets.

Justice Karim directed an investigation into the matter and stated that those found responsible for illegal tree cutting would face legal action. The Punjab Secretary for Transport was summoned to explain the issue.
