Apple’s latest macOS Sequoia 15.2 update has offered a glimpse into the company’s plans for its MacBook Air lineup. Leaks from the software suggest that Apple is gearing up to launch two refreshed models of its ultra-portable notebooks, a 13-inch, and a 15-inch version, both powered by the upcoming M4 chipset.
However, major design changes appear to be off the table for these iterations.
The newly referenced devices, identified by MacRumors in macOS files as ‘Mac16,12’ and ‘Mac16,13,’ align with the naming conventions for the updated MacBook Air models. These entries confirm that the new laptops will retain the same display sizes as the current 13-inch and 15-inch versions, suggesting that Apple will focus primarily on internal hardware upgrades. This strategy mirrors the recent M4 MacBook Pro release.
Apple’s decision to maintain the current design reflects its emphasis on enhancing value through performance and configuration improvements rather than aesthetics. For instance, the M4 MacBook Pro introduced 16 GB of unified RAM and 512 GB of storage as its baseline configuration, a significant improvement over previous models. Consumers appreciated these functional enhancements, even as the external design remained consistent.
Pricing for the M4 MacBook Air could be a critical factor. With the M3 MacBook Air available at discounted rates of $1,099 for the 13-inch model with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage, Apple will need to strike a balance between maintaining affordability and introducing its latest hardware. Assumed pricing starts at $1,199.
Although Apple has not officially announced anything, it is expected that production for the M4 MacBook Air will begin soon, indicating a probable release in 2025.
