Federal Court Denies TikTok’s Request to Pause its US Ban Next Month

TikTok has suffered another legal blow in its fight to avoid a potential ban in the United States.

A federal court has rejected the company’s request for a temporary halt to a law that could force the app’s removal next month. This ruling, which came in response to an emergency injunction filed by TikTok earlier this week, marks the latest setback for the social media platform.

In its attempt to delay the law’s implementation, TikTok stated its intention to appeal to the Supreme Court. The company’s legal team also raised the possibility that President-elect Donald Trump might adopt a different stance on the app, referencing his past statements on the matter. However, a panel of three judges swiftly denied the request, deeming a pause “unwarranted” in a brief order.

TikTok’s fate now rests with the Supreme Court, although there is no certainty that the court will agree to hear the case. The company, in a statement, emphasized its intention to pursue the matter at the highest level, asserting:

As we have previously stated, we plan on taking this case to the Supreme Court, which has an established historical record of protecting Americans’ right to free speech.

TikTok further warned of the potential consequences of the ban, stating, “The voices of over 170 million Americans here in the US and around the world will be silenced on January 19th, 2025 unless the TikTok ban is halted.” This highlights the high stakes involved in the ongoing legal battle.
