The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Sindh Assembly on Tuesday urged the provincial government to take urgent action to evacuate over 570 buildings deemed “dangerous” by authorities across the city to prevent potential loss of life.
During a PAC meeting chaired by Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) reported that many residents continue to live in hazardous buildings, while the SBCA has been unable to enforce evacuations.
The committee directed the chief secretary to implement immediate measures to vacate these dilapidated residential buildings to avert any tragic incidents.
The Director General of Audit, Sindh, criticized the SBCA for failing to demolish dangerous structures, warning that the continued presence of thousands of people in such buildings could result in a disaster at any moment.
The SBCA Director General explained that residents of these unsafe buildings have demanded alternative accommodations before agreeing to vacate.
He disclosed that 570 buildings in Karachi had been classified as dangerous, along with 80 in Hyderabad, 81 in Mirpurkhas, 67 in Sukkur, and four in Larkana.
