The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to operate electric buses on 13 public routes in Islamabad, marking a significant step toward eco-friendly public transportation in the city.
Out of a total of 160 electric buses, 146 have already reached Islamabad, with the remaining 14 buses en route, according to CDA officials. These buses are expected to enhance public transport services, reduce pollution, and promote sustainable urban mobility.
To support this initiative, the construction of a charging station at Zero Point is underway. However, the project faced delays due to the cancellation of tenders twice.
CDA officials have confirmed that a new tender has been issued at reduced rates to expedite the process. Additionally, chargers and parking areas for buses on new routes will be prioritized to ensure smooth operations.
In the initial phase, temporary offices will be set up in containers to manage bus operations. Meanwhile, the CDA has stated that a month-long training program will be required for drivers operating on the new routes.
Electric buses are expected to commence service soon on four routes: Park Road, B-17, PWD, and I-8/I-9. These routes have already been approved, and preparations are underway to launch operations at the earliest.
