2 Punjab Cities to Get Electric Buses

The Punjab government has initiated the process of procuring electric buses for Faisalabad and Bahawalpur, aiming to address the shortage of quality public transport and mitigate issues like traffic congestion, smog, and environmental pollution. This initiative follows the successful deployment of electric buses in Lahore.

The Punjab Transport Company (PTC) is leading the effort, with a pre-proposal meeting scheduled for December 30. The meeting will finalize the prequalification process and allow eligible firms to participate in international competitive bidding, conducted under the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules.

The project focuses on introducing eco-friendly electric buses to improve public transport and environmental conditions in Faisalabad and Bahawalpur. The buses are expected to enhance sustainable urban development by reducing pollution and providing efficient transportation.

The prequalification process has been structured with strict criteria. Participating firms must have a minimum net worth of $200 million and an average annual turnover of $600 million, specifically related to bus production. They must also demonstrate at least five years of experience producing buses (Complete Built Units or CBUs) measuring 7.5 meters and above, with an average production of 7,500 CBUs annually over the last three years.

Additionally, firms must have sold at least 300 electric city buses measuring 7.5 to 13 meters in the past four years and completed three projects for supplying a minimum of 100 electric buses per order in the last five years.

The Punjab Transport Company is also working to explore the designs and standards of electric buses operating in developed countries such as China, the UK, and other European nations. This ensures that the buses procured meet international quality standards suitable for urban routes.

The international tendering process is expected to commence next month, with advertisements to be published in both local and international media. This initiative reflects the Punjab government’s commitment to improving public transport infrastructure and environmental sustainability in the region.

  • Air pollution and smoke is not only due to vehicles but it’s mostly due to deteriorated roads conditions. All the roads connecting Tehsil headquarters Pind Dadn Khan are adding thousands of tonnes dust daily in air. The punjab government should focus on this issue.
