A lucky ticket holder in California became significantly wealthier on Saturday after winning an estimated $1.3 billion Mega Millions jackpot, the fifth-largest in the game’s history.
The winning numbers—3, 7, 37, 49, 55, and the gold Mega Ball 6—were drawn on Friday. The ticket was purchased in Cottonwood, California, a small town located about 200 miles north of San Francisco, according to a statement from Mega Millions.
Joshua Johnston, the lead director for the Mega Millions Consortium, described the win as a “remarkable gift this holiday season,” adding, “At such a special time of year, this moment is truly extraordinary for our winner.”
The jackpot grew to $1.269 billion after 30 consecutive drawings failed to produce a winner. The odds of hitting the jackpot stand at an incredible 1 in 302,575,350.
The largest lottery jackpot ever recorded in the U.S. was a $2.04 billion Powerball prize won by a single ticket holder in California in November 2022.
