Multan to be Made Green City on High Court Order

The Lahore High Court has issued directives to transform Multan into a Green City.

Justice Jawad Hassan of the Lahore High Court released a detailed 15-page judgment, instructing the implementation of measures to make Multan a greener city.

The detailed judgment was issued in response to a petition filed by Tahir Jamal, which sought the enforcement of a 2020 Lahore High Court order. The earlier order had called for the provision of basic amenities and tree plantation along the M-3 Motorway.

The court emphasized the need to develop a comprehensive framework to enhance greenery in Multan and directed its transformation into a Green City along the M-3 Motorway.

The judgment further instructed the appointment of spokespersons in all relevant departments, the collection of suggestions from stakeholders, and the submission of monthly performance reports to the court. These reports are to focus on air quality improvement, tree plantation, and environmental strategies in Multan.

The court proposed the creation of a long-term policy to address deteriorating environmental conditions and air quality. It noted that current efforts to tackle Multan’s growing environmental challenges are insufficient.

Additionally, the case will now be scheduled for a hearing on the first Tuesday of every month.

The court commended the Punjab government and public officials for their efforts in environmental conservation. It highlighted that the Multan Development Authority had planted 10,560 trees within private housing schemes.
