Three prominent universities in Sindh—Sindh University, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), and Allah Bakhsh Soomro University of Art Design and Heritage—remain closed due to a disruption in water supply, according to a report by 24News.
The universities, initially shut for winter vacations from December 20, 2024, to January 12, 2025, have extended their closures following interruptions in their water supply.
The issue stems from maintenance work on Feeder B, a canal connected to the Indus River that supplies water to the universities. Irrigation officials confirmed that the canal’s operations were temporarily suspended to facilitate phased maintenance work, which is currently ongoing.
In response to the crisis, Sindh University has shifted to online classes, commencing on January 13, 2025. Similarly, Mehran University Jamshoro is conducting virtual lessons to ensure minimal disruption to students’ academic progress.
Efforts to restore water supply are underway, with irrigation officials working to complete the maintenance as swiftly as possible. The universities hope to resume in-person activities once the issue is resolved.
