NA Committee Approves Digital Nation Pakistan Bill 2024

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecom has approved the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill 2024 to digitize government operations and improve transparency.

Many lawmakers expressed apprehension about data protection and the risk of misuse as a result of the passage of the bill. The panel passed the bill with a majority vote regardless.

Minister of State Shaza Fatima clarified that the bill does not centralize data collection but will help streamline digital identities and improve cybersecurity. She said the rules under the new Bill will reduce corruption and enhance public service delivery by enabling mobile-based processes and eliminating the need for physical paperwork.

Committee members highlighted issues such as slow internet, inadequate infrastructure, and the absence of a Data Protection Act, which they argued should be addressed before implementing the Digital Nation Pakistan bill. Despite these reservations, the committee passed the bill without facing much opposition.
