OpenAI has introduced the Stargate Project, a bold initiative to invest $500 billion over the next four years to develop advanced AI infrastructure in the United States. With an initial deployment of $100 billion, this project aims to secure American leadership in AI, create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and drive substantial economic benefits worldwide.
The initiative also seeks to re-industrialize the U.S. while enhancing national security for America and its allies.
Key Players and Partnerships
The Stargate Project is funded by SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX, with SoftBank and OpenAI as the lead partners. SoftBank will oversee financial responsibilities, while OpenAI will handle operations. Masayoshi Son, SoftBank’s visionary leader, has been named chairman of Stargate.
The project also brings together leading technology partners, including Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI. These collaborators will play critical roles in the project’s development, particularly in building and managing the state-of-the-art computing systems required to support AI advancements.
Construction and Expansion Plans
Stargate has begun construction in Texas and is actively evaluating additional locations across the U.S. for future campuses. This extensive buildout aims to drive the country’s re-industrialization and establish the U.S. as a global leader in AI technology and infrastructure.
Oracle, NVIDIA, and OpenAI are collaborating closely to build and operate the new computing systems. These efforts build on OpenAI’s longstanding partnerships with NVIDIA since 2016 and its more recent collaboration with Oracle. Additionally, OpenAI will expand its use of Microsoft Azure to train advanced AI models and deliver innovative products and services.
