The federal government has dismissed Ahmed Ishaque Jehangir from his position as Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and reassigned him as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Establishment Division.
According to sources, his removal follows the failure of FIA officials and other authorities to effectively combat human trafficking, a growing issue in the country.
This move comes amid mounting concerns over the rise in illegal migration and human smuggling cases, highlighted by a series of tragic boat incidents. Earlier this month, a boat carrying 66 Pakistanis capsized off the Moroccan coast, resulting in at least 50 fatalities.
This was just one of several recent boat disasters involving Pakistani migrants, including a deadly incident off the coast of Greece in December 2024, where 80 Pakistanis died.
Additionally, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Inspector General of Police, Akhtar Hayat, was removed from his post due to his inability to maintain law and order in the province, particularly amidst escalating violence in Kurram.
The federal government has appointed Zulfiqar Hameed as the new IG for KP.
