The National Telecommunication and Information Technology Security Board (NTISB) has issued a cybersecurity advisory on securing sensitive digital documents and confidential files.
The advisory highlights a growing number of unauthorized access incidents targeting government agencies, private institutions, and public service sectors in Pakistan.
NTISB warns that mishandling or exposure of sensitive digital information can have serious consequences, including data breaches, loss of organizational trust, and threats to national security. The board emphasized the need for strict security measures to safeguard sensitive digital files and prevent unauthorized access.
According to the NTISB advisory, the compromise of sensitive digital documents can result in unauthorized access to internal records, exposure of confidential data, and disruption of institutional operations. Organizations must address vulnerabilities in digital document handling to prevent potential security threats.
Given the increasing use of cloud storage, networked systems, and external storage devices, NTISB identifies a high risk of unauthorized access for entities dealing with sensitive digital records, including government offices, private firms, educational institutions, and SMEs.
To mitigate these risks, NTISB has recommended several measures to enhance digital security. Key recommendations include implementing role-based access control (RBAC) to ensure that only authorized personnel can access sensitive files.
The advisory also stresses the need for multi-factor authentication (MFA) for privileged accounts, encryption of sensitive files, and the use of secure file transfer protocols such as SFTP and HTTPS. Additionally, organizations are urged to apply digital watermarking to documents to trace unauthorized distribution and deter data leaks.
The NTISB advisory also calls for regular monitoring and auditing of access logs to detect suspicious activity. It recommends training employees on best practices for handling sensitive information and implementing Data Loss Prevention (DLP) systems to monitor and control the sharing of confidential files.
The advisory highlights the importance of restricting external storage device access and enforcing strong password policies to further strengthen security measures. Regular vulnerability assessments and penetration testing are also advised to identify and address security gaps before they can be exploited.
NTISB has urged all organizations handling sensitive digital documents to adopt these cybersecurity measures immediately. It warns that failure to implement adequate security controls could lead to data breaches with severe organizational and national security consequences.
