Huawei surprised Samsung by unveiling the Mate XT, the industry’s first commercially available tri-fold smartphone. Despite Huawei facing tough trade sanctions, the Chinese company managed to push forward, outpacing Samsung in foldable innovation.
With no such restrictions limiting Samsung, the urgency within its headquarters to respond competitively must have been high. According to the latest reports, Samsung is preparing to launch its tri-fold smartphone, the Galaxy G Fold, with an expected unveiling in the third quarter of 2025.
Unlike Huawei’s Mate XT, which follows an S-shaped folding pattern, the Galaxy G Fold will reportedly fold entirely inward on both sides. This design choice enhances durability and shields the flexible display from sharp objects when the phone is closed.
Reports suggest that the Galaxy G Fold’s display will measure 9.96 inches when fully unfolded, providing a tablet-like experience with more screen real estate compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s 7.6-inch screen. Despite featuring a larger display, the device will likely maintain a compact form with a folded height of 6.54 inches.
Samsung has not officially confirmed any internal hardware details, but it is unlikely to equip the Galaxy G Fold with the Exynos 2500. Given the company’s strategy of using Qualcomm’s latest chips in premium foldables, the Snapdragon 8 Elite with overclocked frequencies seems like a more probable choice.
While the Galaxy G Fold appears promising on paper, its high price will likely hinder widespread adoption. Tri-fold smartphones require complex hinge mechanisms and multiple flexible screens, making them expensive to manufacture. Samsung may position this device as a niche product, catering to power users and professionals who need a foldable that doubles as a tablet.
Regardless of how the market reacts, the Galaxy G Fold marks Samsung’s first major departure from the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series, signaling a bold step toward the next evolution of foldable smartphones. Now, all eyes are on Samsung’s official announcement, expected later this year.
