WhatsApp is Testing Member Labels in Group Chats

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to assign labels to themselves in group chats. WABetaInfo recently discovered this update in the latest beta build for Android, which is now available for testing.

With this new feature, users can set a custom label for themselves in each group they are part of. These labels will be visible to both current and future group members, but they will not appear outside that specific group. Once assigned, the label remains unless the user chooses to change it, even if WhatsApp is reset or reinstalled.

The Messaging app also provides preset suggestions for labels such as “Jordan’s parent,” “coach,” or “chairperson.” However, users are free to create any label they find relevant. The goal is to help group members easily recognize roles within a chat, making conversations more organized and structured.

When is This Feature Coming?

As with many beta features, there is no confirmed timeline for a public release. WhatsApp typically rolls out updates gradually, which means it could take weeks or even months before it reaches all users. However, its presence in the beta version suggests that WhatsApp is actively working on it and will likely introduce it in a future update.

For now, WhatsApp users who are part of the beta testing program can explore this feature and provide feedback before its official rollout.
