World’s First Invisible Solar Panel: Generates Unlimited Electricity and Can be Applied to Phone Screens

The Korean scientific community has announced the world’s first invisible solar cell, revolutionizing the way solar energy can be harnessed. This breakthrough enables the seamless integration of solar technology into everyday environments without altering aesthetics. Transparent solar cells have the potential to transform windows, phone screens, and building facades into power-generating surfaces, paving the way toward a future of limitless clean energy.

Technological Innovation in Transparent Solar Cells

Developed at the Ulsan National Institute of Science & Technology (UNIST) in South Korea, the new all-back-contact (ABC) transparent solar cell features electrical contacts placed on the rear side. This design allows the crystalline silicon (c-Si) cell to resemble ordinary glass while achieving a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.8% with an average visible transmittance of 20%.

The team’s Seamless Modularization solution eliminates wiring gaps, enabling transparent solar modules to operate without visible connections. A 16 cm² solar module demonstrated a PCE of 14.7%, sufficient to charge a smartphone using sunlight—all while maintaining full transparency.

Turning Buildings into Power Generators

Transparent solar panels offer an innovative solution to space limitations faced by conventional solar systems. By integrating these panels into windows, skyscrapers, and electronic devices, buildings and gadgets can generate energy without compromising design. The technology absorbs ultraviolet and near-infrared light while allowing visible light to pass through, ensuring clear visibility.

Key Applications:

  • Architecture: Transparent panels embedded in windows and facades can power homes, offices, and skyscrapers.
  • Public Infrastructure: Bus stops, train stations, and public spaces can incorporate transparent glass frameworks with dual-energy capabilities.
  • Consumer Electronics: Smartphones and wearables can harness sunlight to extend battery life without bulky hardware.

Environmental and Urban Development Benefits

Transparent solar technology supports modern urban growth and environmental sustainability. It eliminates the need for additional land resources and preserves natural landscapes. The use of eco-friendly materials like nickel oxide and titanium dioxide ensures safe and commercially viable solutions.

While transparent solar cells currently have lower efficiency rates compared to traditional opaque cells, ongoing research focuses on improving materials and designs to enhance performance and reduce costs for large-scale deployment.

Market Outlook and Future Potential

The debut of invisible solar cells marks a significant step in the quest for sustainable energy solutions. Experts predict that these panels will soon reach commercial markets, enabling widespread integration into everyday urban infrastructure. As global efforts toward carbon neutrality intensify, transparent solar technology is poised to become central to creating self-powered buildings, smarter cities, and cleaner energy ecosystems.

Why It Matters

  • Infinite Application Potential: From architecture to consumer electronics, transparent panels provide versatile clean energy solutions.
  • Preserve Aesthetics: Solar integration without compromising building design or visibility.
  • Eco-Friendly Composition: Uses safe, sustainable materials for environmentally conscious energy generation.
  • Supports Smart Cities: Facilitates self-sustaining urban environments without extra land usage.

South Korea’s innovation is set to redefine how we approach energy generation. Transparent solar panels could soon power cities without altering the landscape—ushering in a cleaner, smarter future for all.
