Barcelona is hosting the MWC 2025 event, where Google unveiled two upcoming AI features for Android devices. These features are slated for release later this month.
One of the showcased features is Live Video, introduced at Google I/O 2024 last May. This tool uses Gemini’s advanced multi-modal abilities, enabling users to directly feed visual info from their phone’s camera to the chatbot. As shown by Google, Gemini can analyze the camera’s feed, answering questions about subjects like mid-century modern decor and even providing practical suggestions, such as adding that style into pottery.
The video below shows how the feature works.
Also debuting is a screen-sharing function, which, as the name says, allows users to show their phone’s screen to Gemini for contextual questions about whatever is going on on-screen on browsers or apps. While these features may not represent a novel innovation, as ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode has offered similar live video and screen-sharing capabilities since late last year, Google’s implementation integrates them directly into the Gemini experience, eliminating the need for a separate app.
Starting later this month, subscribers to Gemini Advanced will gain access to live video and screen sharing. Gemini Advanced is bundled with Google’s $20 monthly Google One AI Premium plan. Notably, Verizon has recently incorporated this subscription as a benefit for select customer plans.
In related news, Google recently open-sourced SpeciesNet, an AI model that can detect and identify wildlife through camera trap images. It can even label animals with individual species and taxonomic categories such as “mammalian” or “Felidae,” and even non-animal objects such as “vehicles.”
