New Zealand has secured its place in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, marking their seventh appearance in an ICC final and fourth in the ODI format. The Kiwis triumphed over South Africa by 50 runs in a thrilling semi-final held in Lahore, posting the highest score in Champions Trophy history.
After winning the toss, Santner opted to bat first, hoping to put scoreboard pressure on South Africa. His decision paid off as New Zealand capitalized on a flat pitch, with Ravindra leading the charge against South Africa’s bowlers. Ravindra and Williamson formed a formidable partnership, putting on 164 runs for the second wicket, which is New Zealand’s highest stand in Champions Trophy history. The Kiwis scored 83 runs in the last six overs, propelling their total to 326 and leaving South Africa with a daunting task.
In response, South Africa struggled to keep pace with the required run rate. Their innings was effectively over by the 47th over, with David Miller managing to score a century off 67 balls, but with only No. 11 Lungi Ngidi left to support him. Miller’s efforts were commendable, but they were not enough to chase down New Zealand’s total.
New Zealand will now face India, who secured their spot in the final after defeating Australia. The Kiwis should be more prepared for India after they were thumped in the Group A clash earlier. New Zealand last lifted an ICC ODI trophy in 2000, and they will be eager to end their long wait for silverware.
