The cost of lemons in Multan has skyrocketed, straining consumers. The fruit now sells for up to Rs. 250 per kilogram in the market. The drastic price hike has frustrated citizens, with many seeking alternatives.
Shoppers have expressed their disappointment, noting that lemon prices were around Rs. 80 per kilogram before Ramadan but have now tripled. “How can a common man afford this? We might have to use tamarind or dates instead,” one resident said.
Despite the government setting the official price at Rs. 76 per kilogram, market vendors are selling lemons at far higher rates, with some charging between Rs. 200 and Rs. 250. This has led to concerns over profiteering by traders taking advantage of the increased demand.
A vendor openly admitted to the price manipulation, saying, “I buy lemons for Rs. 160 per kilogram and sell them for Rs. 250 or even Rs. 300, making the most of the situation.”
Citizens have asked the authorities to step in and control the rising prices. They have called for strict action against profiteers and effective price regulation to ensure fair market rates.
