Chicken Prices in Rawalpindi and Islamabad Reach Record Highs

Chicken prices have surged in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, making white meat unaffordable for many as sugar prices continue to rise. Despite official price regulations, authorities appear unable to control the market.

In the open market, live chicken is being sold at Rs. 550 per kg, while chicken meat costs Rs. 800 per kg. The wholesale rate has jumped to Rs. 19,000 per maund, far above the government-set price of Rs. 412 per kg.

According to Poultry Association Rawalpindi Vice President Khursheed Abbasi, chicken demand has increased by 40% during Ramazan, but supply remains low. He warned that prices could climb further ahead of Eidul Fitr if the shortage continues.

Retailers’ Union Secretary Faisal Khan also noted that wholesale rates are rising daily, worsening the affordability crisis.

In response, Citizens’ Action Committee President Malik Zaheer Awan has called for a chicken boycott until Eid to protest the price hike.

Meanwhile, egg prices have also increased, with broiler eggs selling at Rs. 287 per dozen and desi eggs at Rs. 640 per dozen in the open market.
