ChatGPT Can Now Be Your Default Digital Assistant on Android

Android users now have a new option for their default digital assistant, as the latest beta version of the ChatGPT app allows it to replace Google’s Gemini. This update from OpenAI enables users to integrate the chatbot directly into their device’s core functionality.

By making this change, users can activate ChatGPT through standard Android navigation to bring up Google Assistant. Those using the traditional three-button navigation bar can access the chatbot by holding the home button. For users who prefer gesture navigation, a simple swipe up and hold from either bottom corner of the screen will launch ChatGPT. Additionally, if the setting is enabled, a long press of the power button will also bring up the chatbot.

Using this will launch ChatGPT directly into voice mode, where you can voice commands to direct the chatbot. However, users should note that a voice-activated hotword, similar to “Hey, Google” for Gemini, is not currently supported. This limitation stems from the need for specialized APIs, reserved for trusted, pre-installed applications.

The precise timeline for the full public release of this feature remains uncertain. Therefore, users not part of the Android beta program ChatGPT may need to wait sometime. Nevertheless, the integration of ChatGPT as a default digital assistant on Android devices should give users more options.
