A meeting of the National Assembly’s special committee on integrating women into the national mainstream was held yesterday under the chairpersonship of Nafisa Shah. During the meeting, a decision was made to provide laptops to students of Allama Iqbal Open University and Virtual University.
While briefing the committee, Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed stated that in 2002, when HEC was established, 37% of university students were female. Currently, the ratio stands at 48% female and 52% male students.
He also mentioned that universities have been advised to adopt policies regarding harassment. Speaking about the harassment scandal at Islamia University Bahawalpur, he acknowledged that the issue was serious but not as exaggerated as it appeared on social media. He informed the committee that an inquiry report was submitted, actions were taken, several individuals were dismissed from their jobs, and some are still in prison.
Additionally, Federal Ministry of Education Secretary Mohiuddin Wani highlighted the success of an AI-based paper generation initiative in Islamabad.
