Assassin’s Creed Shadows Beats Player Records for Previous AC Games

Ubisoft announced over the weekend that its recently released Assassin’s Creed Shadows has rapidly gained two million players, exceeding the launch figures of previous Assassin’s Creed titles including Origins and Odyssey.

The game’s debut day sales had already hit the one million mark. This impressive start comes as a significant boost for the publisher, which has faced several financial setbacks in recent years with titles such as Skull and Bones, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Star Wars Outlaws.

While Assassin’s Creed Shadows has achieved a strong initial player count of two million, its overall success remains to be seen. The distribution of players across various platforms will be a key factor in assessing its performance. Still, this title marks Ubisoft’s return to day-one releases on Steam, the dominant PC gaming platform. However, its concurrent player peak on Steam, at 60,000, is relatively modest. This could be attributed to PC gamers’ prior experience of purchasing Ubisoft titles through Ubisoft Connect or the Epic Games Store. It is too early to tell from this figure, as the PC platform may still represent a significant portion of the game’s total user base.

Looking ahead, speculation surrounds Ubisoft’s future, with reports indicating that the Guillemot brothers, the company’s principal shareholders, are seeking investors to establish a new entity. This entity would control Ubisoft’s major franchises, beginning with Assassin’s Creed. The solid launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is likely to bolster these efforts.
