Chief of the Leghari tribes, Muhammad Jamal Khan Leghari, has confirmed the presence of the extremely rare Asiatic desert cat (Felis lybica ornata) in the Sulaiman Mountain Range of District Dera Ghazi Khan.
This elusive feline, distinguished by its sandy coat and remarkable ability to thrive in arid environments, is rarely seen in Pakistan.
Mr. Leghari, who captured the rare cat through his lens, stated that due to its critically low population, conservationists have chosen to keep its exact location undisclosed. This precaution is aimed at protecting the species from threats such as illegal trapping, hunting, and habitat destruction.

Wildlife officials and local researchers have reacted with both excitement and concern. “This is a significant discovery for Pakistan’s biodiversity, but it must be handled carefully,” said a conservationist involved in monitoring efforts.
“If poachers or collectors discover its whereabouts, this rare cat could disappear forever,” warned the tribal chief.
A subspecies of the African Wildcat, the Asiatic desert cat is already endangered due to habitat loss and human encroachment. Its presence in Pakistan highlights the ecological richness of the Sulaiman Mountains, a refuge for many endangered species.
Environmentalists are calling for stronger conservation measures. “This sighting should prompt stricter anti-poaching laws and enhanced habitat protection efforts,” Leghari emphasized.
For now, authorities are discreetly monitoring the area, gathering data while avoiding unnecessary attention.
