Iftikhar Ahmed Backs Mohammad Rizwan to Remain Pakistan’s Captain

In a timely show of support amid growing debate around Pakistan’s leadership options, middle-order batter Iftikhar Ahmed has thrown his weight behind Mohammad Rizwan to remain a long-term captain of the national side, praising the wicketkeeper-batter as the ideal choice to continue leading the team into the future.

Speaking in a recent interview with Arfa Feroze Zake, Iftikhar was candid in his assessment of Rizwan’s leadership credentials, stating (translated), “For me, if you compare everywhere, I think Rizwan is the best option. It’s not because he is my friend or that we play for the same club, Multan Sultans. If you assess our options, Rizwan is the best choice and he can improve.”

The endorsement comes at a time when the Pakistan cricket setup finds itself at a leadership crossroads. With Pakistan suffering heavy defeats under Rizwan’s leadership in the Champions Trophy and the New Zealand tour, and the T20I team already under Salman Ali Agha’s control, questions continue to swirl around long-term planning and Rizwan’s future.

Rizwan, who currently serves as the leader of the ODI team, has been one of Pakistan’s most dependable performers in recent years. However, results under his guidance have not been exemplary, leading to questions about his suitability in an ever-evolving sport.

The wicketkeeper-batter can make a case for himself as he leads Multan Sultans in the PSL once more. Under Rizwan’s captaincy, Multan Sultans have been one of the most consistent teams, reaching four consecutive finals and lifting the title in 2021. The latest vote of confidence from Iftikhar Ahmed is also reflective of Rizwan’s reputation.

Whether the PCB sticks with Rizwan or looks elsewhere remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the competition for leadership in Pakistan cricket is no longer a one-horse race.
