Govt Ends 31,000 More Jobs

The federal government has abolished 30,968 public sector posts and plans to eliminate another 7,724 positions in the coming phases.

The Cabinet Secretary informed the Senate Standing Committee on Finance that most of the abolished posts are in Grade 1, with 7,305 already removed and 4,253 more to be eliminated.

Higher-grade positions have also been impacted: two posts each in Grades 21 and 22 have been abolished, along with 36 in Grade 20 and 99 in Grade 19, with another 71 Grade 19 jobs to be cut later.

In Grade 18, 203 posts have been abolished, and 36 more are slated for removal. Additionally, 760 positions in Grade 17 have been eliminated, with 58 more planned.

The committee was informed that these reductions have already generated savings of Rs. 30 billion for the national exchequer, with further savings expected as more cuts are implemented.

The government has also decided to end the “son quota” — a policy that previously allowed a government job to be granted to a family member of an employee who died during service.

The Establishment Division has issued instructions to all ministries and divisions to enforce the revised policy.
