IPL Franchise Takes Legal Action Against Travis Head Ad

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have dragged ride-hailing giant Uber into legal territory, alleging trademark infringement and disparagement in recent YouTube advertisements featuring Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Travis Head. According to reports in Indian media, the Delhi High Court on Thursday reserved its verdict on RCB’s plea for an interim injunction against the advertisement.

The controversy stems from a 59-second YouTube ad titled “Baddies in Bengaluru ft. Travis Head,” released by Uber Moto, which has racked up over 1.3 million views. In the commercial, Head is seen racing through the streets of Bengaluru toward a stadium, where he defaces a “Bengaluru vs. Hyderabad” sign, spray-painting over the name of the home team to change it to “Royally Challenged” Bengaluru—a jab that RCB argues is a direct mockery of its identity.

Representing Royal Challengers Sports Pvt. Ltd., the senior advocate argued that the use of the phrase “Royally Challenged” is a calculated attack on the franchise’s brand value, executed under the guise of humor.

Uber Moto, an official sponsor of the Sunrisers Hyderabad, countered the allegations by defending the ad as a light-hearted promotional campaign rooted in commercial free speech. Its counsel insisted that the video does not disparage RCB but merely uses playful banter ahead of the May 13 clash between RCB and SRH at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Uber’s counsel also emphasized that Travis Head, currently a part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad, did not directly label RCB as “baddies” in the ads but instead positioned himself as a player aiming to give the opposition a “headache” on the field, a play on his surname.

The court, after extensive arguments from both parties and citations of relevant case law, reserved its decision on the interim injunction.

The case has sparked a wider debate over the use of satire, parody, and comparative messaging in Indian advertising, particularly when it intersects with the multi-billion-rupee IPL ecosystem, with Travis Head caught in the crossfire.

As the countdown to the RCB vs. SRH showdown begins, what happens off the field might prove just as consequential as what unfolds on it.
