In a significant move to reduce accidents and safeguard public lives, Federal Minister for Communications, Abdul Aleem Khan, declared that vehicles older than 20 years will no longer be permitted to operate on the country’s motorways.
During a visit to the National Highways and Motorway Police Headquarters in Islamabad, Khan examined the command and control system and other departments. He was honoured with a guard of honour and paid tribute to the martyrs, remembering their sacrifices.
Highlighting the rising accident rate, the minister stressed the need for stringent measures. “We need to make tough decisions to save lives. Accidents are repeating at the same spots on the motorway. The Inspector General must develop a robust plan to address this issue,” Khan said.
The minister also emphasised the importance of enforcing stricter rules, stating that the ban on vehicles over 20 years old would be strictly enforced. He reaffirmed the ongoing zero-tolerance approach towards overspeeding and axle load violations.
Additionally, Khan noted that commercial drivers will be required to undergo compulsory training, and within the next three months, fitness certificates for all commercial vehicles must be issued.

Motorways already have very strict rules to observe but, there is no rigid form of enforcing their following. 20 years age of a vehicle is too arbitrary a check. There are many robust vehicles like jeeps, Range Rovers and SUVs like Prados and Land Cruisers, which are better on roads than all brad new tin boxes like Suzuki Carrys and type.
Agree. Infact a 2000 model Toyota Corolla is more stable at high speeds than a 2025 model Suzuki Alto.
Excellent descion taken by Aleem khan sb,
I appreciate his visionary step…
Motoway banaya hai ya saza di hai logon ko
20 saal say ziayad purani gari say fitness certificate lain
Pata nhn kon gadha policies banaata hai
I agree with you ye policies banany Waly bul kul gadhye Hain ya band kamron me beath kar asal haqeqat ko bhol jaty Hain in ko kaya pata ky logon ky Kya masyil hain
I think no any chance destroy by the
Govt for mony generation.
Aik nahi saray hi gadhe jama keye huai hain

Age is not the accurate criteria to determine a vehicle’s condition. I’ve seen 2 year old cars in pathetic condition especially rent vehicles that are not maintained properly. A lot of people have well-maintained JDMs and SUVs from the 90s. If they want to control accidents, focus on vehicle maintenance rather than age.
Agree with Umair Khalid.
It’s vehicle’s road worthiness with regards to safety criteria which is of paramount importance.
In the USA, there is generally no age limit for vehicles on motorways.
Similarly many European countries like Austria don’t have age limit for vehicles.
For the safety purposes, however, vehicles must pass mandatory annual safety inspections, like the German “TÜV,” to be road-legal.
100% agree for your comments
Decision to ban 20 years vehicles does not serve any purpose but mockery of law rules enacted. Similarly old aged drivers to be banned as usually fatigue overcome them on long route distance. The vehicles worn out model 2024 preferably would be permitted as aging is the criteria. Please hold on sane not be a laughing stock as akin to 26th constitutional amendment.
Well, the vehicle age limit should be 10 years with with motor vehicles fitness certificate. Like old days the motorway police should train driver to use proper lanes, right most lane is being used by slow moving vehicles like they do on other highways and creates lot of problems and often end up in accidents.
Sir tusi te malak ho per Awaam te kammi hai saari. Awaam ki karay? Tusi apni Malaki nu side te rakh k zra awaami style Wich socho. Mehrbaani malak Sahb.
Aleem khan is absolutely chawal ,the problems with establishment, they still far far distance to wisdom and set the people like Aleem khan on high level just to take their piece of corruption.
I don’t know how this Aleem Khan chawal became a federal minister
Fitness certificate should be mandatory rather than the decision taken. If the vehicle is in perfect condition on the time of inspection, owner must be awarded with free certification! (Which will motivate public to keep long route vehicles in perfect condition all the time). If they are doing it just to suck the blood. Corruption will start sooner.
This is an excellent idea but you can’t get the core of this implementation unless work with honesty which seems to be impossible in current circumstances as people will use to get certificates by money rather against actual examination of the vehicle 🚜.
Absolutely nonsence, vehicles reliability and fitness should be implemented like in west to ensure fit vehicles ply on roads..
The minister for this job seems a non sense, instead of age fitness is required. The minister might have long term business interest with new cars manufacturing and importers, as in our country this is quite easy to earn on permanent basis till retirement.
The Motorways all over the World have some protocols which are strictly followed by the drivers traveling on the Motorways. It doesn’t matter that how old is the Vehicle, the question is that whether the vehicle is technically and mechanically fit to travel on Motorways. The Pocession of original driving license by the drivers while traveling on Motoways is mandatory and the same be checked at the entry points of Motorways and the fake licenses be cancelled on the spot. This may also help to decrease the percentage of Accidents on the Motorways.
Each vehicle should be inspected periodically and fitness certificate should be issued to vehicles. Only vehicles declared fit should be allowed on motorways. It’s simple.
This decision is brainless, Accidents are caused by over speeding or by careless driving, not by old cars.
Aleem khan is a bullshit. nonsence stupid.
Kaisey kaisey dramey. Unqareeb lal kurti pay bhi qabza honey walla hy awaam k hathon sy wo bhi jaey ga
If the accidents are taking place at the same spot, as news item says, then, what is the logic behind banning more than twenty year old vehicles? You actually need you to look at the fault in road at that spot.
The decisions should be data driven. Unfortunately, we don’t analyse the data for exact reasons. In the news accidents mostly attribute to driver s mistake
I dare authorities to implement this on Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway ;)
We seen accidents of new vehicles not oldest.
Donkey’s are running this country, literally they have no idea what to do.
These policies are made by the matric failed employees.
A comisoner in Karachi ban 6 seater rikshaw in Karachi with no proper transport
Highly unfortunate to learn about the proposed law, instead of incorporating the fitness test of vehicles, abrupt ban will highly damage the middle class travelers. Do the authorities know, how maby vehicles are the road and how many are 20 years old? Only 3 to 4 % of population affords to buy new models others bank on old cars, whereas % of accidents of new vehicles is higher than old vehicles.I totally dislodge this approach.
Rather banning vehicles, its better to introduce a policy which ensures there is a law for Vehicle Maintenance Standards in every province when you apply or extend or renew your vehicles token tax, the vehicle needs to pass Road worthy standards. After then, the vehicles tax should be renewed along with the maintenance certificate valid for 1year.
If it passes the test, it doesn’t matter how old is the vehicle.
Good decision if enforced on commercial vehicles.
Following actions just need to be implemente:
1. No entry of unregistered vehicles (commercial or private).
2. Check fitness certificate of commercial vehicles at entry point.
3. Shifting M Tag Booth (North side) at Lahore- Islamabad route before exit point.
Most important;
1. Lane protocol according to the Speed
2. Age limit for DRIVERS … not less than 20, not more than 70 years
3. Old and LOW SPEED Vehicles ban
I think they have mentioned 20 years old cars and not human age between 20-70 years, no need to give foolish ideas to donkeys, they will implement without using brain.
Dr Sahb tusi te Dr ho. Cash hi cash. Awaam te saari kammi hai. Nawian gaddian Kidron asi. By the way, it is an observable phenomenon that new car drivers drive slow due to the luxury in which they are. They’re not in any hurry. Your information is faulty.
Instead system of issuing and maintenance of fitness certificates with validity of three years shall be enforce. I have a vehicle more than twenty year old and is well maintained. Every three years it goes for fitness test and if passed the registration is renewed. If not the vehicle needs to rectify the faults and reappear for the test.
Seems like a new venture of automotive is on the way to sell more new vehicles
Incompetent officer with brainless decision to ban 20 yrs old car instead of compulsory car fitness certificate by an authorized mechanic.
Pakistan can’t progress until n unless they get rid of SIFARSHI NALAIQ LEADERS.
Height of stupidity by a man who has be elected presumed to have been elected by the people of Pakistan. This proves he is the outcome of form 47
This comment also proves you are the outcome of Dharnas!
It will be one of the stupidest decisions if implemented. Those even thinking on these lines should be admitted into a mental hospital. It is not the age of the vehicle that matters, it is the fitness and roadworthiness of the vehicle. Even in the highly developed countries including European power houses like Germany, very old vehicles ply on their high speed autobahns. An annual fitness examination and certificate are important.
Those making such decisions use new official vehicles at the expense of the common man. The one who made such a suggestion should be removed from service.
absolutely correct. This minister should be admitted in mental hospital. Corrupt man
Why age limit for a Car❓ ❓❓
When a Car is rarely used, well maintained and taken care of, then what is the Problem ❓ ❓❓
🛑 Yes, Corrupt People can constantly buy new Cars.
Then Encourage More Corruption, Strangulate the Honest People. Shame
Local car industry has bribed the Govt to pass this rule, as buying power of Ppl has already dropped significantly, & companies are selling on installments.
A corrupt minister would give such a decision
Its bad because people have cars that are 20 years old and because cars are so expensive nowadays we can’t even buy a new one so i think this should change
Fantastic decision!! Instead of 20, make it 10 please as kaafi traffic hogaye hay motorway par.
Why not make it 1 year
Stupid idea of a stupid person. Most accidents are nowadays caused by new Suzuki alto. You must control your vehicle quality and must ensure lane discipline. A country where a grade 20 government officer can’t buy a new car, most people are forced to buy expensive cars due to high taxes. We can’t buy new cars because prices are high. After increasing taxes day by day, now they will rob us by banning cars
It’s just a nonsense, old vehicle user’s are mostly safety conscious, because they know their vehicle is old, so they maintained it properly. O tu the other hand, new vehicle owner’s don’t do it, because it’s in their psyche, that our vehicle is new, so nothing gonna happen. So, This is, your so called significant move to reduce accident, is a total shit move.
The new age limit rules for vehicles on motorways really highlight how important vehicle condition and updates are. It actually reminds me of how in games like Car Parking Multiplayer Mod APK, you can upgrade and customize your cars to keep them in top shape for all kinds of challenges!
Respected Ma’am.
I’m sorry to disagree with your comment. Actually, Nawaz sharif is an awaami person. A public man. He gets vote from the common public, who drive fit but relatively old vehicles. Majority of accidents are caused by super fast new vehicles that lose control on the motorway not by some moderately pacing baleno or mehran. Working class can’t afford 4 or 5 million rupee cars. This law will reserve motorways for the rich few only. I hope you now understand.
Its not the vehicle that needs to be banned its the idiot who’s driving it should be tested for mental health , these drivers here have never taken a proper driving test or theory test , they have all passed with the power of baba quid e Azam , as I always said its always a user error not the machine
Such policies should have been framed in the light of research on the causes of accidents. I think this policy is not well thought n should be revisited before it’s maturity.
What about drivers age limit. Humans are more dangerous than machine.
Criteria is pathetic, It should be tied with fitness certificate by a competent authority
Fitness certificate may be issued rather than the bad and unjustified decision taken by govt. We the poor citizens of Pakistan can not afford new models cars and vehicles, although most of the vehicle is in perfect condition and should be awarded free fitness certificates during the time of inspection, owners must get these free certification! (Which will motivate public to keep long route vehicles in perfect condition all the time). If they are doing it just to suck the blood. Corruption will start sooner.
We request from the decision makers to revisit this idea.
A dumb approach must say if anything you are lowering the productivity rate of the country
therefore further ruining the economic situation by this law as a lot of commuters can not afford new cars given their ridiculous price rates, a better approach should be to enforce an annual fitness check certificate on all cars preceding motorways. A strict law on quality control for new cars should be imposed as well.
what a stupid decision, they should ask for fitness certificate rather then baning 20 years vehicle down rightly this is not a country of millionaires, minister is a millionaire we the nation are not.
Khurram Bhai you are so true. Aleem Khan has done his best to ruin the previous govt and now he is doing his best to defame this govt. Accidents are usually caused by over speeding done by expensive car owners not some mehran or baleno. Aleem Khan should be removed from office. Nawaz built motorways for poor Pakistani Awaam.
Good morning Sir.
If your report is correct then Mr. Aleem Khan, after successfully ruining the Imran Khan regime, has now vowed to raise to the ground the popular pml-n govt. Nawaz built the motorways for the poor awam of Pakistan and Aleem khan is reserving motorways for the khawaas of Pakistan. It will severely defame the good pml govt.
Age limit, 20 years old vehicles ban on motorways is very very good decision. We appriciated.
Instead of ensuring that the vehicles on the road meet safety standards, they ban everything. A 30-year-old car can be in better shape and condition than a 5-year-old.
Akal naa ho to mojain hi mojain
So anyone driving a 2005 Eagle Eye Honda Civic can’t take it on the Motorway! What a joke!
