India has banned over 16 prominent Pakistani YouTube channels with a combined subscriber base of 63 million for allegedly spreading “misinformation against the Indian army” as well as “provocative and communally sensitive content” following the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir.
The ban, implemented yesterday on April 27, 2025, targets major Pakistani news outlets and individual journalists alike. A prominent podcast channel, The Pakistan Experience, has also been banned as well as ProPakistani’s own How Does It Work Podcast channel.
According to government sources, these channels were apparently spreading “false and misleading narratives and misinformation against India, its Army and security agencies.”
The ban was reportedly a recommendation from India’s Ministry of Home Affairs following the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists. The incident has escalated tensions between India and Pakistan.
In addition to the YouTube bans, India has also issued a warning to the BBC over its reporting of the attack, particularly objecting to the use of the term “militants” instead of “terrorists” in their coverage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed a strong response to those behind the attack, stating: “The time has come to raze whatever is left of the terror haven. The will of 140 crores will break the back of the masters of terror.”
The National Investigation Agency has formally taken over the investigation of the Pahalgam attack.
