Half Life 3 May Finally Be Happening After Over 20 Years

A fresh wave of speculation has reignited hopes for Half-Life 3, with new claims suggesting that Valve’s elusive sequel is not only in active development but already playable from start to finish. The rumors stem from Valve-focused content creator Tyler McVicker, who shared insights during a recent Q&A livestream.

Development Allegedly Nearing Completion

McVicker claimed that the long-awaited title, often dubbed the holy grail of PC gaming, is now playable “end-to-end,” implying that major narrative and technical milestones have been completed. While McVicker stopped short of providing evidence, he suggested a potential summer announcement and winter release timeline.

Hints from Valve Insiders

The rumor is further supported by past statements from concept artist Evgeniy Evstratiy, who, in a March interview, stated he was present “in the room where Valve made Half-Life 3.” Meanwhile, another Valve leaker, Gabe Follower, hinted the game would conclude protagonist Gordon Freeman’s storyline, suggesting that the long-running saga might finally reach a proper ending.

Clues in Code and Game Updates

Internet sleuths recently discovered references to “HLX” — widely believed to be the codename for Half-Life 3 — embedded in code from updates to Valve’s other titles, including Dota 2 and the upcoming hero shooter, Deadlock.

Not Another VR Title

McVicker also noted that the HLX project is not being developed for virtual reality, unlike 2020’s Half-Life: Alyx. Instead, he referenced the use of procedural generation tools, though these are reportedly not tied to terrain or roguelike systems.

Despite the growing list of hints and leaks, Valve has not made any official announcements. The company remains silent on the future of the franchise, even as Half-Life 2 recently marked its 20th anniversary.
