Sony has introduced the Xperia 1 VII, maintaining much of the design and core hardware from the previous model. While it adds some internal upgrades and a larger ultrawide camera sensor, several components remain unchanged and may not justify the high price tag when compared to competing devices.
Design and Display
The Xperia 1 VII features the same 6.5-inch OLED display as its predecessor, with a 1080 x 2340 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The panel is said to be 20% brighter, but resolution and display technology are otherwise carried over. Higher-resolution or LTPO displays, now standard in other flagship phones, are still absent.
The phone uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front and Gorilla Glass Victus on the back, with an IP68 rating for water and dust protection. It retains Sony’s tall, narrow form factor, physical two-stage camera button, and front-facing stereo speakers. New color options this year include Moss Green and Orchid Purple, alongside Slate Black.
Internals and Software
The device runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip and includes 12GB of RAM. Thermal management is supported by a vapor chamber. Storage starts at 256GB, and a microSD card slot is included—a feature that has largely disappeared from most high-end phones.
It supports Wi-Fi 7 and improved Bluetooth bandwidth. The Xperia 1 VII ships with Android 15, and Sony has committed to providing four major software updates and six years of security patches. While this matches current industry trends, it still falls short of the support periods offered by some competitors.
Cameras
The rear camera system includes a 24mm wide-angle lens with a 1/1.35-inch Exmor T sensor, f/1.9 aperture, optical image stabilization, and phase-detection autofocus. The telephoto camera again supports continuous zoom from 85mm to 170mm but continues to rely on a relatively small 1/3.5-inch sensor, limiting image quality, especially in low light or at extended zoom.
The only notable update is to the ultrawide camera, which still uses a 16mm focal length but now includes a larger 1/1.56-inch sensor and a brighter f/2.0 aperture. The improvement should enhance image clarity and low-light performance. The camera software features AI-based autofocus, subject recognition, and color and exposure adjustments, which are borrowed from Sony’s existing imaging systems.
Despite these updates, the hardware limitations in the telephoto lens reduce the versatility and consistency expected in a high-end camera setup. It remains to be seen whether the software enhancements will make up for a lack of hardware updates.
Battery and Pricing
The phone includes a 5,000mAh battery with 30W wired charging. These specifications remain unchanged and fall behind newer models that offer faster charging and more efficient power management. The device does not introduce any upgrades in wireless charging or battery density.
Sony claims the battery can retain over 80% capacity after four years of use, supported by software features like Adaptive Charging and Battery Care. While these measures may extend battery lifespan, the lack of faster charging or new power-saving innovations is noticeable.
The Xperia 1 VII is priced at $1600 in the UK for the 12GB/256GB version. A 512GB model is planned for limited availability in Asia.
