Shocking Number of Drivers in Karachi Are Unaware of Traffic Laws

As deadly road accidents continue to surge in the city, experts have raised alarm over the widespread ignorance of traffic laws among drivers.

At a seminar held at the Arts Council of Pakistan, speakers revealed that 98 percent of people in Karachi only know how to operate a vehicle but have no understanding of road rights, traffic rules, or responsible driving practices.

The event, titled “Road Traffic Accidents in Karachi: Causes and Solutions,” featured insights from law enforcement officials, doctors, and civil society representatives. Ali Suhag from the Sindh Police Accident Analysis Research Centre said most drivers lack patience and fail to give way even in emergencies.

He pointed out that many drivers don’t wear helmets, citing a case where a man said his son avoids helmets because it “ruins his hairstyle.” Suhag stressed that such behavior reflects dangerous ignorance and must be countered through strict enforcement and awareness.

Dr. Sabir Memon of the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Trauma said road crash cases have risen sharply. “We now receive around 150 accident cases daily,” he noted, adding that most victims are young motorcyclists.

Speakers urged the government to improve road safety, enforce existing laws, and launch education campaigns to prevent further tragedies.
