The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has reportedly approved the launch of Phase 2 of the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, with an estimated cost of Rs. 20 billion. The expansion plan includes the construction of new dedicated routes and the procurement of 50 additional buses from China.
According to details, Phase 2 will cover key routes including Ring Road and Dalazak Road, aiming to extend the BRT network and improve public transport access in the provincial capital.
The decision comes despite the fact that two major buildings from the original Phase 1 of the BRT system have yet to be completed. However, the provincial government has included the new phase in the budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
According to a national daily, citing sources, 50 buses will be imported from China specifically for this project, which is expected to significantly reduce traffic pressure and enhance commuting facilities in Peshawar.
The Peshawar BRT system, which was inaugurated in 2020, is one of the largest transport initiatives undertaken in the region. With Phase 2, the government hopes to expand its reach and address the growing demand for efficient and affordable public transportation.
