Honda is Launching New EVs Despite Cutting Back Investment

Honda has revised its electrification roadmap, lowering its planned investment from $69 billion to $48 billion by 2031. CEO Toshihiro Mibe confirmed the change during a recent press conference, adding that the company now expects electric vehicles to account for less than 30% of global sales by 2030—a notable reduction from its earlier targets.

Honda 0 Series to Launch in 2026

Despite scaling back, Honda remains committed to launching new EVs. The 0 Series will debut in 2026 with the Saloon, a production version of its earlier concept vehicle. The lineup will expand to include three electric SUVs scheduled for release between 2027 and 2028. One of these has already been previewed in near-production form.

No Successor for Honda Prologue

The Honda Prologue SUV, developed through a now-ended partnership with General Motors, will receive a facelift in 2028. Its counterpart, the Chevrolet Blazer, will undergo a similar update. However, due to the dissolution of the Honda-GM EV collaboration, a next-generation Prologue is not expected.

China EV Expansion Continues Independently

In China, Honda continues to advance its electric lineup through joint ventures with Dongfeng and GAC. New models include the GT electric sedans and Ye-branded SUVs (Ye P7 and Ye S7), all based on dedicated EV platforms. Honda has not confirmed whether these vehicles will be offered outside the Chinese market.

Hydrogen Development Moves In-House

Following the conclusion of its hydrogen partnership with GM, Honda is now pursuing hydrogen vehicle development independently. A new hydrogen-powered model is scheduled for release in 2027. The company has not yet disclosed whether it will be globally available or restricted to select markets.
