These Cars Are Now Exempted From Emission Tests

The Punjab government has launched a province-wide vehicle emission testing campaign to combat worsening air pollution, especially in Lahore.

All car owners are required to get their vehicles tested for emissions by June 30, 2025. Testing is currently free at over 60 booths across Lahore and other major cities, but fines will be imposed after the deadline for non-compliance.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to address the region’s recurring smog crisis, which has led to hazardous air quality and periodic shutdowns of schools and public spaces.

A key update is that the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has officially exempted new cars and light transport vehicles (LTVs) less than three years old from mandatory emission testing, citing data that these vehicles consistently meet emission standards if properly maintained. This exemption aims to streamline the process and focus resources on older, higher-risk vehicles.

Despite these efforts, experts and auto industry leaders have criticized the exclusion of motorcycles and rickshaws from the current testing program, noting that these vehicles make up the majority of Punjab’s traffic and are significant contributors to air pollution. There are also calls for stricter regulation of fuel quality, as poor fuel standards undermine the effectiveness of emission controls.

To manage the rush before the June 30 deadline, the government has expanded testing facilities, including booths at universities and colleges, and extended operating hours. After June 30, vehicles without a valid emission certificate will face fines starting at Rs. 2,000 for the first offense and Rs. 5,000 for repeat violations
