Honda has announced it will discontinue the Civic Type R in Europe by 2026, marking the end of a 28-year legacy of high-performance hatchbacks. The decision follows a similar move by Ford, which recently confirmed the end of the Focus ST.
Final Model: The Civic Type R Ultimate Edition
The farewell version, known as the Ultimate Edition, will be limited to just 40 units across Europe. Each model will be painted in Championship White and feature red graphics extending from the iconic red Honda badge to the doors. Carbon fiber details are present throughout the car, including the spoiler, interior trim, and even the cupholder and keyring.
Owners will also receive a gift box with a numbered emblem (1–40), reinforcing the exclusivity of the edition. While the model includes cosmetic updates, it does not feature the significant performance enhancements seen in the previous FK8 Limited Edition.
Honda’s Tribute to a Legacy
In a statement, Hannah Swift, Head of European Strategy and Product at Honda, described the Ultimate Edition as a tribute to “28 years of hot hatch performance.” She noted that the model represents Honda’s passion for driving excitement, even as the automaker adapts to changing industry standards and European regulations.
The press release hints that this may not just be the end of the FL5 generation, but possibly the entire Civic Type R line, at least for the foreseeable future in Europe.
Regulatory Compliance and Uncertain Future
The Civic Type R’s discontinuation may be tied to the incoming GSR2 safety regulations in the European Union. These rules require additional active safety technologies, which the current Type R does not support. Honda has not announced a successor or plans for adaptation, raising questions about the future of performance hatchbacks under tightening regulatory conditions.
However, the Civic Type R has seen past interruptions in its production history before returning stronger. Whether this marks a temporary pause or permanent farewell remains to be seen.
Allocation and Availability
Only 10 units of the Ultimate Edition will be available in the UK, reflecting the country’s strong market demand for performance-oriented hatchbacks. These units will be sold alongside remaining standard Civic Type R models on a first-come, first-served basis. Prices are expected to start at approximately £60,000.
