The Islamic month of Muharram is expected to begin in Pakistan on Friday, June 27, according to moon sighting forecasts, which means Ashura (10th Muharram) will likely fall on Sunday, July 6.
As per tradition, public holidays in Pakistan are observed on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. However, this year both days fall on the weekend — Saturday and Sunday — meaning government employees are unlikely to receive additional days off.
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, led by Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, is scheduled to meet on Thursday in Quetta to sight the Muharram moon. Zonal meetings will also take place in major cities including Lahore.
Muslims around the world observe Muharram with reverence. In Pakistan, it is marked with religious gatherings and processions, particularly on the 9th and 10th of Muharram to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at Karbala.
