Generative AI is changing how work is done on freelance platforms, replacing low-complexity tasks while increasing demand for AI-related roles. According to newly released data from Upwork, reported by Axios, freelancers skilled in AI are earning more than those who aren’t.
Freelancers working in AI fields saw their earnings rise by 25% over the past year. Those who integrate AI into existing skills—such as machine learning experts or graphic designers using generative tools—command higher rates. On average, AI-related roles pay over 40% more per hour than jobs unrelated to AI, the report noted.
Kelly Monahan, managing director at the Upwork Research Institute, explained that those who already have domain expertise benefit the most from adding AI tools to their workflow.
Despite AI’s rapid expansion, most businesses remain cautious about full automation. Upwork data shows that employers prefer humans who use AI as a support tool over fully automated processes. Workers augmenting their roles with AI outnumber those pursuing full automation by more than two to one.
This aligns with earlier findings from Anthropic, which indicated that AI is still viewed as a tool requiring human oversight. Managers reportedly trust humans working with AI more than AI systems operating independently.
While the need for basic, repetitive coding has declined, Upwork’s report shows that experienced developers remain in demand for more advanced projects. Freelancers with jobs requiring coding for at least a quarter of their work now earn 11% more than they did in late 2022, around the time ChatGPT launched.
At the same time, a trend called “vibe coding” is gaining traction. It involves using AI to write code without in-depth technical knowledge, creating opportunities for a new kind of generalist who can design and code using AI assistance.
