Bank of England Wants Your Design Ideas for New Currency Notes

The Bank of England is set to change its banknotes for the first time in over 50 years and you can help redesign the new currency.

Since the 1970s, Bank of England notes have featured prominent historical figures such as Sir Winston Churchill, Jane Austen, JMW Turner, and Alan Turing.

Now, the Bank is considering a broader range of themes for the next series of £5, £10, £20, and £50 notes.

Options include notable historical figures, nature, architecture and landmarks, arts, culture and sport, noteworthy milestones, and innovation. The Bank is also open to other suggestions from the public.

Victoria Cleland, the Bank’s chief cashier, said banknotes are “more than just an important means of payment. They serve as a symbolic representation of our collective national identity and an opportunity to celebrate the UK.”

The monarch will continue to appear on the front of all notes, but the Bank is considering moving away from only using historical figures on the reverse side.

The public consultation is open until 11:59 pm on 31 July 2025. People can share their views on potential themes by filling out the online form or by writing to:

The final decision on the new designs will be made by the Bank’s governor. Over 4.7 billion Bank of England notes are currently in circulation, worth around £86 billion.

Despite the rise of digital payments, the Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to providing cash for those who need it.
