The Punjab government has approved key infrastructure projects aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving road safety in Rawalpindi and Mandi Bahauddin.
These projects were given the green light during the second meeting of the Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) for the fiscal year 2025-26, held on Friday.
In the roads and bridges sector, the PDWP approved the construction of two underpasses in Rawalpindi—one at GPO Chowk and another at TM Chowk on The Mall—as well as a pedestrian underpass near the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC).
The total estimated cost for these projects is Rs. 5.552 billion. Meanwhile, a separate road infrastructure project was approved for Mandi Bahauddin. It involves the widening of the road from District Complex to Kakuwal Bridge along the Gujrat Branch, and includes the construction of a flyover. This project is estimated to cost Rs. 1.864 billion.
The meeting was chaired by Chairman Planning and Development Board Punjab, Dr. Naeem Rauf, and attended by key officials including Secretary P&D Board Rafaqat Ali and Chief Economist Masood Anwar.
These infrastructure upgrades are part of a broader development package that includes nine major schemes across various sectors, with total funding exceeding Rs. 52.3 billion.
