An AI bot targeted high-ranking officials in the United States and abroad, using artificial intelligence to mimic the voice and writing style of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
According to the State Department, the imposter contacted three foreign ministers, a U.S. governor, and a sitting member of Congress in an attempt to gain access to sensitive information.
The campaign, which began in mid-June 2025, involved the use of AI-powered voice and text messages that closely resembled Rubio’s mannerisms.
The perpetrator created a fake Signal account to reach out to the officials. Authorities believe the goal was to manipulate these powerful figures and potentially compromise confidential information or accounts.
Rubio’s office responded by issuing a cable warning State Department personnel about the impersonation attempts and urging increased vigilance.
The State Department has launched an investigation to identify the source of the impersonation and to determine whether any information was compromised. The FBI has not yet commented on the incident.
“This is a new frontier in deception,” a senior U.S. official told The Washington Post. The official emphasized that the technology used in this case demonstrated a high level of sophistication, raising concerns about the risks to national security when trusted voices can be so easily replicated.
