Govt Decides to Increase Sugar Prices

The federal government has decided to gradually increase the price of sugar to Rs. 171 per kilogram before the start of the new crushing season on November 7, sources in the Ministry of Industries and Production told ProPakistani.

According to the plan, sugar prices will rise in four phases from August 15 to November 15. The price will go up by Rs. 2 every fortnight, increasing from the current Rs. 165 to Rs. 171 per kilogram by October 15.

The Ministry of Food Security has directed provincial governments to strictly monitor sugar prices and ensure action is taken against those selling at rates above the notified levels.

Sources also revealed that sugar currently includes a tax burden of Rs. 27.50 per kilogram. Officials emphasized that no further increase in sugar prices will be allowed after October 15, with the crushing season officially beginning on November 7.
