Lahore has received its first demonstration vehicle of the Super Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (SRT) System, a trackless metro described as a “subway on the road.”
The vehicle was introduced this month as part of an effort to explore the system’s potential for Pakistan’s urban transport needs. The SRT runs on Virtual Track Technology, a digitally guided system that does not require traditional rail infrastructure.
The technology, already in use in several Chinese cities as well as in Malaysia, the UAE, and Türkiye, was first launched in China’s Jiangsu Province in 2021. It has also received the Zhan Tianyou Award from the China Civil Engineering Society.
The vehicle unveiled in Lahore is part of a demonstration to assess whether the system can be introduced locally. There’s no official word yet on when or if this system will be launched in Lahore — for now, it’s just a test.
