The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) threats to boycott today’s ACC meeting in Dhaka have gone unheard, and now the board has decided to participate in the event after failing to achieve their objective.
The annual general meeting of ACC, set to take place in Dhaka, is expected to play a decisive role in determining the future of the 2025 Asia Cup, which India is slated to host in September.
For days, the tournament’s fate has remained uncertain due to political tensions and logistical disagreements between India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. BCCI had also threatened to not accept any resolutions passed if the meeting was not moved from Bangladesh. However, ACC President Mohsin Naqvi did not budge from his stance, forcing BCCI to attend the meeting, even if only virtually.
A source within the BCCI confirmed to Hindustan Times that the board will participate in the meeting via video link. “Yes, we have decided to attend the meeting virtually,” the official said on condition of anonymity.
India’s decision to boycott the Dhaka meeting was seen as part of the wider standoff between India and Pakistan following their military confrontation earlier this year. But with the stakes high for the Asia Cup — a key tournament in the Asian cricket calendar — and their threats going unheard, India’s cricket board has been forced to change its tone.
Today’s ACC Meeting is set to decide the fate of this year’s tournament. One of the major talking points will be the venue for the Asia Cup, with UAE emerging as a strong contender to host the tournament, while India could still retain its status as the official host.
With India now back at the virtual table, other boards such as Sri Lanka Cricket and the Afghanistan Cricket Board — who had initially followed BCCI’s lead in skipping the meeting — are also expected to attend remotely.
This latest development offers a glimmer of hope for Asia Cup fans, who were left wondering whether the competition would be called off. For now, all eyes are on the outcome of Thursday’s ACC Meeting, which could pave the way for a tournament-saving compromise.
